Wagner's Ring Cycle

Sept. 12 to Oct. 1, 2006

"We're experiencing some of the most exciting operatic planning I can remember as our Ring takes shape. The convergence of a team of four directors and one designer is a thrilling challenge, and 'intelligence,' 'vision,' 'imagination,' 'daring,' 'collegiality' are just the beginning of trying to describe the essence of the work with which our directors and designer are engaged.

"It's important to realize that, rather than four different 'takes' on the Ring, we are aiming for a united vision and of course Michael Levine, our sole designer, is the 'glue.' We didn't set out to have four directors, but in our search I talked to a number of people and found that there was, in the team we have assembled, an extraordinary shared sensibility in the way they looked at the Ring. Each would approach his opera with a sharply defined personal focus, but the added excitement is what their collective vision would bring to defining what this Ring is about. So, not four operas separately conceived, but a tetralogy in which four brilliant minds are united.

"We have superb casts and an orchestra immersed in preparations for this repertoire. Wagnertuben can be heard in any spare moments of break between rehearsals, and the palpable buzz around the company is unlike anything I have experienced before."
